After reading Chapter 4 of The Great Gatsby, pair up with someone you have not worked with so far this year. Together, discuss the questions below. As you do so, make notes about what you talk about and any specific quotes that you reference as a post on your own blog. Both members of the partnership should complete a blog post for this although they should look very similar.

  1. More rumours emerge about Gatsby. List them and any others we have read about so far. What kind of picture is emerging about this man? That Jay Gatsby is: a bootlegger, “he has killed a man who had found out that he was nephew to Von Hindenburg and second cousin to the devil”, that he went to Oxford, and that he went to Oggsford. In previous chapters, the rumours state that he is: he killed a man once, he was a german spy in the war, he was in the American army in the war.
  2. Why do you think Fitzgerald lists all of Gatsby’s party guests? To show that he was very high up in society because all of these well-known people were attending his parties. Also shows that there are regulars.
  3. Gatsby tells Nick about his life. Do you believe him? Why/why not? Bonus question: do you think Nick believes him? With Nick, he was at first doubtful about Gatsby attending Oxford, but then Gatsby showed him his metal, then Mr Wolfshiem says that Gatsby attended Oggsford college in England, which may place back some doubt. In my opinion, he seems genuine but like he’s hiding something. I don’t think he’s lying but maybe not revealing something. Maybe about his family.
  4. What does Jordan’s story of Daisy’s marriage reveal about Daisy? Does this change your perspective on Daisy at all? Why/why not? Daisy, right before the wedding, was obviously having second thoughts. It shows that Daisy may have initially just felt pressured to marry Tom, as marrying for wealth was a woman’s purpose and this would fulfil it; however, as Tom mentioned, Daisy seemed very in love with Tom after she was married to him, which could mean that she may have just been playing along as there was not much of a choice, she doesn’t seem very settled and let Tom walk all over her (when he cheated on her with one of the Chambermaids from the Santa Barbara Hotel).
  5. Nick says, “There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy and the tired.” What do you think he means by this? List each of the major characters we have met so far in the novel and assign them to one of the four categories Nick describes. Pick three and justify your assignment. I believe that the pursued is Daisy, in the sense of Gatsby wanting to have lunch and reconnect with her, and that in her past she was often pursued by men. I believe that Gatsby was the pursuing as he goes through so many lengths to connect with Daisy after so many years – moving in across the bay from here, asking Nick to set up tea with them, ect. Tom is the busy, juggling two lives, one with Daisy and another with his mistress and Nick is the tired, as he is surrounded, knowing all of these things about these people, all whilst dealing with his own life.

  1. Ashley, a great start to your blog! You look like you are getting the hang of how to use it!

I want you to think about how you can increase the analysis aspect of your answers. At the moment, you are just answering the question in a minimal way. Can you see an area that you can develop further? If you can’t, let me know and I’ll point you in the right direction.
